Michael Jackson RIP
Michael Jackson
1958-2009

Now that that’s out of the way, I can get down to business.  I’m having a hard time with the passing of Michael Jackson.  I remember, growing up, choreographing dance routines with my friends to his hits (and there are plenty!)  I even got to visit Neverland Ranch once.  My mom had set it up for  the preschoolers at her school to go and she brought my sister and I along.  Michael wasn’t there at the time, but we had a BBQ, watched Dumbo in his movie theater (with all the free snacks we wanted), went on his carnival rides, rode the train, looted the candy shop (all free, again), and we even got to peek at his bedroom through the glass doors.  Not only was all the food & candy we wanted free, but he didn’t charge the school a dime either.  He really went above and beyond for the kids.

However, I also remember being outside the courtroom in my hometown, Santa Maria, when he was on trial.  I worked for the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum at the time and my coworker (friend) Courtney and I knew the courthouse was right around the corner from us… and that there were vendors set up selling food.  Well, we were hungry and heard they had really good tamales and cotton candy.  So we locked up the museum (Shhhh!) and walked over.  Right when we got there  Michael was leaving, so we got as close to his car as possible to get a good look.  We were definitely shocked when he got there and preceded to jump onto the roof of the car and dance!  It was one of the weirdest things I’ve ever experienced. This man was on trial for molestation and he was jumping on cars.

Michael JacksonI had taken a picture with my cell at the time, but that was probably 5 phones ago, so I found one online.

First, what if he did do it? Those poor boys have to hear us all praising him like he’s was Jesus or something.  His face and music are everywhere!  I can’t imagine what that would be like.

An equally disturbing thought- what if he didn’t do it?  To to be accused twice, stand trial, loose your reputation? .  Society stole his childhood and ruined his adult life and it’s possible that he was just really weird and liked to act like a kid. That’s awful.

And, now that’s he died, it worse.  I have seen an article claiming the first boy that accused Michael is now saying he lied and one claiming Michael’s kids told LAPD they had been molested.

I don’t like that I can’t know for sure… mostly because I would hate to find out I was supporting a child molester!!  But, I guess all I can do is let God/Karma/the Universe/whatever decide what he deserves.

And there really is no denying he made AMAZING records and had the moves to match.  So, I’ve decided to celebrate the music I grew up grooving to and just try to put the man (and the mess) out of my mind.  With that, I put together my 10 favorite Michael Jackson songs for this weeks Song of my Sunday. Hope you enjoy!

Get in line fu*kers… Cause there are quite a few people that I’d like to beat the shit out of, you know, if I’m only gonna get community service anyway.

Chris Brown

Singer Chris Brown was in court this week facing charges for the incident between him and Rihanna after the Grammy Party last February.  He plead guilty to felony assault and was sentenced to 5 years probation and 6 months of community service.

A total joke, if you ask me.  Did you know-

1 in 3 teens is abused in a relationship. And 80% stay in the relationship after the first act of violence.

And now society has pretty much said we don’t care.  Probation and community service, are you kidding me?  He beat the hell out of her and told her he was going to kill her. Not even 1 day in jail?!? It’s no wonder so many women don’t get help… there is none.

Green Tip Tuesday- Green Cleaning June 9, 2009

This week for Green Tip Tuesday, I want to talk about cleaning green.  A lot of the cleaning supplies that you use everyday are horrible for your family and the environment.  Every time you use them, harsh chemicals are sent into the air. (You know that stuff you and your kids breathe?!?) It’s a poisonous habit, but it’s one you can stop.  Not only are there plenty of natural products you can buy,  there are also some of the best cleaning supplies right in your pantry!

Green Works

A baby company of Clorox.  Their products are 99% natural and work really well.  I’ve tried the following two items and love both!

Natural Bathroom Cleaner

Natural Bathroom Cleaner- made with essential oils, filtered water, and a coconut based cleaning agent, this spray not only works great on bathroom counters, sinks, tub, tiles and shower doors…. it actually smells pretty good too.

green works2

My favorite! These natural cleaning wipes work on almost anything but wood and they don’t leave any yucky chemical residue.

Seventh Generation

Is a really amazing company with some SUPER products. This is from their web site:  Seventh Generation brand-name products include: non-chlorine bleached, 100% recycled paper towels, bathroom and facial tissues, and napkins; non-toxic, phosphate-free cleaning, dish and laundry products; plastic trash bags made from recycled plastic; chlorine-free baby diapers, training pants, and baby wipes; and chlorine-free feminine care products, including organic cotton tampons.toiletpaperI use a lot of their paper products and would recommend all of them…. haven’t tried the tampons yet though, I’m guessing those are just organic though, not recycled :D 41+qRZrCZEL._SL160_

Using what you got

To be completely honest with you, you might have everything you need to be a green cleaning master already in your kitchen!
Lemon Branch Bouquet

Lemon- there is a reason it’s in every cleaning product known to man… it works!  Lemons smell great and clean away grime, grease, and grit even better then most of those chemical filled products.  Use it with Olive Oil for a furniture polish or baking soda to clean your dishes.  The rinds can be tossed anywhere that needs to be deodorized and the juice will help whiten your whites. Check out these other cool uses for lemons!

saltSalt- Great when you need to get your scrub on!! Pots, pans, counters, and sinks.  Mix it with lemon (& water) to shine metal or vinegar (& water) for an all-purpose cleaner. And, here are 15 more neat household uses for salt.

vinegarWhite Vinegar- great for all over the house. (Remember to spot check people… I will NOT be replacing anyone’s counter tops!)  Mix it with warm water to clean floors, microwaves, coffee makers, refrigerators, walls, toilets, shower doors, tubs, fireplaces, almost anything… go and see for yourself! Also, the Vinegar Institute has a bunch more uses for vinegar.

baking sodaBaking Soda- Not just for deodorizing your fridge-  It will fight nasty odors all over the kitchen and bathroom. Baking soda can remove most stains from your laundry and you can make volcanoes with vinegar to clean out clogged drains!  If that’s not enough to get you hooked, check out these 75 Extraordinary Uses For Baking Soda.

alcoholRubbing Alcohol- Back in the day, alcohol & salt was all I ever used to clean the bongs, so I should have known I could use it to clean other stuff too! You can add some to your vinegar and water mixture and really shine your mirrors and glass.  It can also be diluted a little and used as a disinfectant. Don’t forget:: this one is SUPER flammable! Here’s: Top 10 Weird Uses for Vodka wait, that’s not right— 10 Uses for Rubbing Alcohol and Extraordinary Uses for Rubbing Alcohol that’s better!

boraxBorax- From the 20 Mule Team Web Site: 20 Mule Team® Borax is made of 100% Borax, a naturally occurring mineral composed of sodium, boron, oxygen and water. 20 Mule Team® Borax is not harmful to washing machines, plumbing or septic tanks and does not contain phosphates or chlorine.  Right now, I only use it for cleaning my shower/tub. Not only does it make it shine like you wouldn’t believe, it doesn’t take that much effort either. LOL  And there are tons of other ways to use borax around the house (20 Mule Team lists some of them on their web site, click here!)

Hope you enjoyed this week’s Green Tip Tuesday and I really hope you will try and green a little bit of your cleaning routine!

Since Father’s Day is coming up I decided to dedicate the next 2 Song of my Sundays to Dads!  There are soooo many songs about dads and for dads, it’s crazy….in a good way!  Hopefully there will be at least one song that reminds you of your dad, or any special male you’ve looked up to throughout the years.  My dad isn’t around anymore, but both my stepfather and father-in-law are such amazing men and have done so much for me… I am forever grateful for their love and kindness.

There are also a TON of songs written from the point of view of a Dad and I really love them, so they’re included too! If you are a Dad, I’m sure you’ll relate and smile… or shed a tear! (Just warning you, because some of them are definite tear jerkers!)

Click the song titles if you want to read the lyrics! :D Enjoy

First 15 Songs For Dad

  1. Just the 2 of Us- Will Smith Such an adorable video and song! I love me some Will Smith!

  2. Stealing Cinderella- Chuck Wicks Tear Jerker! Tear Jerker!

  3. Cleaning This Gun (Come On In Boy)- Rodney Atkins If my Dad would’ve been around when I started dating, this would’ve been him… exactly!

  4. Dance With My Father- Luther Vandross :(

  5. Drive- Alan Jackson Another one that reminds me of my Dad, I used to LOVE to drive the boat and his truck. (Shhh!)

  6. Butterfly Kisses- Bob Carlise Such a beautiful song from a Dad to his baby girl.

  7. I Loved Her First- Heartland Kinda creepy if you think about it too much, but it’s really just meant to be a super sweet song about dads giving away their daughters

  8. Do I Make You Proud- Taylor Hicks I sure hope I make all my Dads proud!

  9. Daddy- Beyonce Of course, almost every girl wants their husband and son to be just like their Daddy.

  10. Daughters- John Mayer Sing it John, Sing it!  Just go ask your favorite stripper about her relationship with her dad!!

  11. Fathers & Daughters- Paul Simon Love this song, from The Wild Thornberry’s Movie, about a Father’s love for his daughter.

  12. Daddy’s Hands- Holly Dunn A Tribute to Dad

  13. Daddy Never Was the Cadillac Kind- Confederate Railroad I read a paper my dad wrote in college and it said that “material things can’t go with you, so they shouldn’t worry you.”  Although I like a little pretty every now and then, I still think the best gift is time with the people you love.

  14. He Didn’t Have to Be- Brad Paisley The ultimate song for Stepdads and other “dads”!

  15. Love Without End, Amen- George Straight A little secret about a father’s love.

Green Tip Tuesday- Heating & Cooling June 2, 2009

So, today is part 2 of 10 in my Green Tip Tuesday Extravaganza!! Last week was about switching at least some of your light bulbs to compact fluorescent ones. Not only are they better for the environment, but in the long run, better for your wallet too! This week is all about Heating & Cooling your house… the green way!

  • When you are out or sleeping make sure and set your thermostat
  1. During the summer and warmer months keep it set to 78°
  2. When the weather is cooler, have it set to 62°
  • Ceiling fans (and stand up ones too!) are a great way to cool off a room and much better then A/C
  • Plug up your air leaks! It has been said that most houses have enough cracks and leaks to equal leaving a window open all year! Sealing them up will save you a lot on your energy bill… and maybe help save the planet a little too! Check out this Duct Sealing Brochure from Energy Star.
  • Consider installing ENERGY STAR qualified heating and cooling equipment
  • Shade your east & west facing windows. They can be a killer during sunrise and sunset.
  • Check (and change!!) your air filters. Those things can get pretty nasty. Not only is it bad for your health, but wasting you money, and electricity!
  • Make sure to tune your HVAC (heating & cooling equipment) yearly … or ever! Here is a great Maintenance Checklist
  • Dress to help save energy… not waste it. Girls with their jeans tucked into their Uggs in the middle of July (in SoCal) are NOT doing this. :D

Now get to it! We’ve got lots to do to be Green! And make sure to come back next week for Green Cleaning!
